Paris Saint-Germain have released a statement after manager Luis Enrique was hospitalised on Friday. The Spaniard, who guided the French giants to their first Champions League title last season, was involved in a cycling accident, with the club confirming he had suffered a fractured collarbone.
Enrique is known to be an avid cyclist, and was often spotted riding a bike during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar prior to Spain’s early elimination from the tournament during his time in charge of La Roja. He subsequently took part in in the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa, which saw him cycle roughly 700 kilometres across eight days.
However, it has been confirmed that Enrique did suffer an injury on his latest trip on the bike, with a statement since being put out on social media.
PSG Release Statement on Luis Enrique Injury
As posted in a tweet on X, the extent of the injury was detailed, but a timeline is yet to be given for the Spaniard’s recovery.
“Following a bicycle fall that occurred this Friday, Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique was attended to by emergency services and will undergo surgery for a fractured collarbone,” a club statement read.
“Paris Saint-Germain wishes to express its full support to Luis Enrique and wishes him a speedy recovery. Further updates will be shared in due course.”
It is not yet known exactly how Enrique was injured, nor is it specified whether he will miss any time on the sidelines as a result. While a recovery time has also not been revealed, the NHS suggests that those who sustain the injury can expect a full recovery in anywhere between 8-12 weeks.
This is not the first time a PSG manager has sustained a serious injury while in charge of the Parisians. Thomas Tuchel suffered a fractured metatarsal just weeks before his side were set to compete in the delayed 2020 Champions League final. As a result, the German was seen on the sidelines sporting a medical boot and crutches, while often sitting on a drinks cooler closer to the edge of his technical area.
