Several journalists inside Wembley took to social media to reveal what happened during a minute’s silence for Diogo Jota ahead of the FA Community Shield clash between Liverpool and Crystal Palace.
Before kick-off ahead of the clash at Wembley, several wreaths were placed at the pitch side by Palace chairman Steve Parish and Liverpool legend Ian Rush as a tribute to Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
The pair died in a car crash in Spain in July. The Reds had a specially made ‘Forever 20’ emblem printed on their shirts as a nod towards Jota on Sunday, with the number being permanently retired by the club following player’s death.
Before the fixture, a minute’s silence was also observed by fans inside Wembley. However, several journalists reported that boos could be heard from some sections of the Palace supporters.
The Athletic’s James Pearce wrote: “Minute’s silence for Diogo Jota interrupted by a small minority of Palace fans. Boos from Liverpool end and referee cuts it short.”
The Mail’s Lewis Steele also posted: “Palace fans ruining the minute’s silence for Diogo Jota. Scumbags. (Worth noting that 99% of them were very respectful).”

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher said: “Why on earth there are a certain few inside the stadium who would spoil that moment is absolutely beyond me.”
BBC Sport journalist Emma Smith reported: “Unfortunately the moment of silence for Diogo Jota and Andre Silva was interrupted by a few people shouting from the crowd, and was cut short.
“The majority of supporters show their appreciation for Jota and Silva with applause after the ref blew his whistle.
“Two talented young men, gone far too soon.”
