Kostas Tsimikas looks set to draw the curtain on his time at Liverpool, with growing indications that the Greek left-back is preparing to seek a fresh challenge away from Anfield this summer. The 29-year-old’s omission from the squad for Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace has further fuelled speculation over his future.
Tsimikas, who has been a reliable backup to Andy Robertson since arriving from Olympiacos in 2020, featured regularly in pre-season under new manager Arne Slot, even filling in at centre-back. However, the arrival of £40 million signing Milos Kerkez in June has added significant competition on the left side of defence, leaving the Greek international facing limited opportunities for regular playing time.
Liverpool are open to a permanent transfer but have ruled out any loan move. Nottingham Forest have already shown serious interest earlier in the window, with club owner Evangelos Marinakis – a compatriot of Tsimikas – reportedly keen to bring him in. Promoted Leeds United and several other Premier League and overseas clubs have also been linked with the defender.
During his five seasons at Anfield, Tsimikas has averaged around seven Premier League starts per campaign, playing a key role in several cup competitions. One of his standout moments came in the 2022 FA Cup final, when he scored the winning penalty against Chelsea. He has also collected silverware including the Premier League title, FA Cup, and EFL Cup.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are in the midst of an active summer of squad changes. The sale of Darwin Núñez to Al-Hilal for a fee potentially rising to £56 million is part of a transfer window that could see the club generate more than £200 million in player sales. Offloading Tsimikas would contribute further to that figure while streamlining their defensive options.
With just weeks remaining in the transfer window, a move for Tsimikas appears increasingly likely. Should he depart, he will do so with the appreciation of Liverpool supporters, who will remember him as a dependable squad player and a key contributor in some of the club’s recent successes.
